On Saturday, January 11, 2025, AlterNet reported that a right-wing attorney known for his threats against political opponents of President-elect Donald Trump directed his ire at the judge presiding over Trump’s hush money trial. Mike Davis, a prominent conservative figure and founder of the Article III Project, made a controversial statement aimed at Judge Juan Merchan on social media platform X.
In his message posted on Friday, Davis stated, “Dear Judge Juan Merchan: You better hope your daughter Loren Merchan has saved the money she’s raised off your unprecedented, bogus trial of Trump. You may desperately need that to cover your legal expenses for your blatant corruption.” This statement follows a previous post in which Davis used profane language to address the same judge, further escalating the tension.
Davis has been a staunch defender of Trump, labeling the legal challenges faced by the former president as “lawfare.” He has made numerous media appearances advocating for Trump and criticizing the legal system’s actions against him.
Earlier on the same day, Trump received a significant legal decision when Judge Merchan unconditionally discharged his conviction, allowing him to avoid jail time. Trump, however, continues to express his dissatisfaction with Merchan, referring to him as “highly conflicted” in a post on Truth Social. In this post, Trump claimed that “there never was a case” and labeled the prosecution as a “scam.”
Despite the discharge, the ruling means that Trump is officially a convicted felon, although he will not face any additional penalties as a result of the judge’s decision.
