On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, abc27 News reported that closing arguments are set to begin in the attempted murder trial of suspended Dauphin County Judge Sonya MiKnight. The trial features testimony from Michael McCoy, MiKnight’s ex-boyfriend, who is the victim in the case. McCoy, 55, recounted the night of February 10, 2024, when he was allegedly shot by MiKnight while he was asleep. He has since undergone multiple surgeries for a gunshot wound to the face, which resulted in him losing sight in one eye.
During his testimony, McCoy disclosed that he and MiKnight began dating in February 2023, but their relationship soured due to jealousy. He stated that he had caught MiKnight looking through his phone days before the shooting, leading to escalating tensions between them. McCoy emphasized that he was unaware of any threats to his safety prior to the incident.
When questioned by the prosecution, McCoy affirmed his belief that MiKnight shot him, noting that they were alone in the house at the time of the incident. The defense has raised doubts about McCoy’s claims, suggesting the possibility that he may have shot himself. In response, McCoy firmly denied ever having suicidal thoughts.
The prosecution is being handled by members of the Cumberland County District Attorney’s office to avoid any conflicts of interest with Dauphin County officials, who have previously worked with MiKnight. The trial continues as both sides prepare for closing arguments.
