On Thursday, April 2, 2026, WGXA reported that Chief Judge Edward D. Lukemire has retired from the Houston County Judicial Circuit, concluding a career of over 40 years in public service.
Lukemire, who served as a prosecutor for 13 years and a judge for nearly 30 years, officially stepped down on Wednesday, April 1.
Lukemire had previously communicated his retirement intentions to the Houston County Superior Court staff and formally notified Governor Brian Kemp in February. In his letter to Kemp, Lukemire expressed his affection for his career but acknowledged his need to slow down.
Following his retirement, Lukemire requested an appointment as a senior judge at the state level to provide assistance to other courts when needed.
Governor Kemp approved this request by signing an executive order, appointing Lukemire as a Senior Judge of the Superior Courts of Georgia.
