On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Finger Lakes Daily News reported that Cayuga County Court Judge Thomas Leone has retired after serving for nearly two decades since 2007. Leone’s departure from the bench occurred in April when he chose not to run for a third 10-year term.

Leone attributed his decision to New York’s mandatory judicial retirement age and his wish to dedicate more time to his family. He was initially elected in 2006, defeating then-District Attorney James Vargason, and ran unopposed for reelection in 2016.

Before becoming a judge, Leone was in private practice specializing in labor law and also served as Auburn’s corporation counsel. In 1995, he ran for Cayuga County district attorney but was unsuccessful before seeking a judgeship.

During his tenure in Cayuga County Court, Leone handled criminal, civil, and family court cases. He acknowledged the emotional challenges of family court cases and the profound impact judicial decisions have on individuals’ lives.

Leone expressed gratitude for the court staff he collaborated with throughout his career. He plans to enjoy his retirement and spend quality time with his family, including his grandchildren. Leone’s retirement creates a vacancy on the Cayuga County bench.
