On Friday, February 21, 2025, AL.com reported that a Jefferson County judge presiding over a significant $30 million lawsuit concerning alleged abuse of two former Hoover High School football players has recused himself from the case. The decision by Circuit Court Judge Reginal L. Jeter was influenced by his family’s connections to the football program, particularly noting that his son is a member of the freshman team.
In an official order signed on Thursday, Judge Jeter acknowledged the potential for public perception issues, stating that while his son was not involved in the alleged incidents and did not participate in varsity activities—the focus of the lawsuit—there could still be questions regarding his impartiality. He emphasized the importance of maintaining public confidence in the judicial system, which led to his decision to step down from the case.
Subsequently, the case has been reassigned to Judge David J. Hobdy, who will now oversee the proceedings. The lawsuit was filed in December by the guardians of the alleged victims, identified in court documents as D.G. and D.L. The plaintiffs contend that the Hoover Board of Education exhibited negligence in hiring coaches Drew Gilmer and Adam Helms, who are at the center of the allegations.
The situation escalated when videos showing practices involving the coaches went viral, prompting the school board to place Gilmer and Helms on administrative leave. Both coaches resigned shortly thereafter, in August.
The plaintiffs also requested Judge Jeter’s recusal based on his wife’s previous employment with the school district. However, Jeter found this argument unconvincing, noting that his wife had not worked for the district in four years and that his family does not receive compensation from the school system.
