On Thursday, November 7, 2024, News 19 reported that a hearing is scheduled for Alabama Judge Gil Self in an ethics case where prosecutors aim to highlight his alleged spending patterns. The Lauderdale County Circuit Judge is facing multiple charges of misusing his office for personal financial gain.

Currently on leave while still receiving his salary, Judge Self was indicted in January on 14 counts of using his position for personal benefit, alongside two counts related to benefiting a family member. Additional charges include misleading state auditors and perjury before a grand jury.

The charges pertain to Judge Self’s management of court funds from 2020 to 2023. He has pleaded not guilty, asserting that the allegations stem from “honest but correctable mistakes” made during a time of significant pressure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prosecutors from the Alabama Attorney General’s Office plan to introduce evidence of further spending by Judge Self that is not included in the original indictment. This evidence, flagged by the Alabama Department of Public Examiners, includes reimbursements made to him using court funds from 2019 to 2023. Prosecutors contend that this additional information is essential for the jury to understand the broader context of the case and the reasons for the auditors’ notification to the Attorney General’s office.

A status hearing is set for December 9, 2024, but no trial date has been established.
