On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, the Arizona Commission on Judicial Conduct announced that Yuma County Justice of the Peace Juan M. Guerrero was publicly censured by the Supreme Court of Arizona.
The censure came after the Commission accepted a settlement agreement between their disciplinary counsel and Judge Guerrero regarding two complaints of misconduct. The first complaint was filed in May 2023 following Guerrero’s arrest and conviction for driving under the influence in April and November of that year. This resulted in a citation and misdemeanor conviction for DUI.
The second complaint against Guerrero was initiated in December 2023 by Presiding Yuma County Superior Court Judge David Haws. This complaint also involved the DUI arrest and conviction, but further alleged inappropriate uses of government resources and accepting payment for wedding ceremonies performed during official court hours.
As part of the stipulation, Guerrero agreed to resign his position as a justice of the peace and not take a judicial role again in Arizona. He also agreed to accept the public censure from the state Supreme Court.
Judge Guerrero’s former courtroom is located at 1358 E. Liberty Street, San Luis, AZ 85349, and can be reached at (928) 314-5100.
