On Wednesday, October 29, 2025, amNewYork reported that Justice Lawrence Knipel is retiring from the Brooklyn judiciary after serving for more than 35 years. A retirement celebration was held in his honor on October 22 at Giando on the Water in Williamsburg.
Knipel served as the administrative judge for civil matters for the Brooklyn Supreme Court for 12 years. At the celebration, Knipel performed Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” with Justice Matthew D’Emic, the administrative judge for criminal matters for the Brooklyn Supreme Court.
In his remarks, Knipel emphasized the importance of cooperation among courthouse staff. He noted the absence of infighting within the Brooklyn court system, highlighting the collaborative environment he experienced during his tenure. He praised the staff’s dedication and mutual reliance, describing his 12 years as administrative judge as “a labor of love.”
Knipel is retiring from his position at the civil courthouse at 360 Adams St. in Downtown Brooklyn. He plans to enter private practice. His career in the judiciary spanned over three decades.
The event was attended by Knipel’s friends, family, and colleagues, who gathered to commemorate his service on the bench. The celebration included both formal remarks and a musical performance, reflecting Knipel’s diverse interests and contributions to the legal community.
