On Thursday, February 20, 2025, the Mirror reported that a judge in Southern California broke down in court as graphic images of his deceased wife were presented to the jury during his murder trial. Judge Jeffrey Ferguson, 74, is facing charges for allegedly shooting his wife, Sheryl Ferguson, during a dispute that escalated while they were watching the television series “Breaking Bad” on August 3, 2023.

During the proceedings, prosecutor Seton Hunt revealed that an argument had erupted between the couple. The situation intensified when Ferguson reportedly made a gun gesture toward his wife, who subsequently asked him to point a real gun at her. Ferguson complied, and the weapon discharged, resulting in her death.

In recorded comments made to police shortly after the incident, Ferguson admitted to the shooting, stating, “I killed her. I did it.” Following the shooting, both Ferguson and his son called 911, and Ferguson sent a text message to his court clerk and bailiff, expressing remorse and notifying them of his situation. He wrote, “I just lost it. I just shot my wife. I won’t be in tomorrow. I will be in custody. I’m so sorry.”

The trial, which has attracted considerable attention within the Orange County legal community, is being presided over by a judge from Los Angeles County to prevent any conflicts of interest. Ferguson, a former criminal prosecutor, appeared in court wearing a gray suit and glasses, maintaining a plea of not guilty. His defense attorney, Cameron J. Talley, has indicated that the shooting was accidental and plans to have Ferguson testify during the trial.

Hunt disclosed that police video footage captured Ferguson outside his home in handcuffs, where he expressed distress over the situation and lamented that he never expected to be in such a predicament. In his remarks, he noted that he felt he had become like the violent gang members he used to prosecute.

Further investigations revealed that law enforcement found a substantial collection of firearms at Ferguson’s residence, totaling 47 weapons and over 26,000 rounds of ammunition. Hunt emphasized that Ferguson had considerable experience and training in firearm usage, raising questions about the nature of the incident.

Ferguson’s son, Phillip, also testified in court, recounting his father’s teachings on firearm safety, including the importance of pointing weapons in a safe direction. After the shooting, Phillip described how he jumped over a couch to disarm his father and called for emergency assistance. He attempted to perform CPR on his mother when he realized she was no longer breathing. Phillip recalled hearing her say, “He shot me,” as he intervened.

After the incident, Ferguson was initially released on a $1 million bail in 2023 but was re-arrested the following year when Judge Eleanor J. Hunter determined that he had violated his bail conditions by consuming alcohol. He was subsequently released again on a heightened bail of $2 million.
