On Sunday, October 6, 2024, MSNBC reported that a Colorado judge received numerous threats following the sentencing of former Mesa County clerk Tina Peters to nine years in prison. Peters, known for her role in promoting conspiracy theories concerning the 2020 presidential election, was convicted of orchestrating a security breach of the county’s election system.

The sentencing took place after Peters was found guilty on multiple charges, including three counts of attempting to influence a public servant and one count each of conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, first-degree official misconduct, violation of duty, and failing to comply with state regulations. Her actions were linked to unauthorized access given to an individual associated with Mike Lindell, CEO of MyPillow, who has propagated false claims about election integrity.

Judge Matthew Barrett, who presided over the case, criticized Peters for her conduct during the sentencing hearing. He stated that she exploited her position as a county clerk for personal gain and engaged in the spread of misinformation. Barrett emphasized the severity of her actions, declaring the damage caused by her lies as “immeasurable.” He expressed concern that Peters would repeat her actions if given the chance, describing her as “defiant” throughout the proceedings.

Following the sentencing, Will Sightler, the court executive for the 21st Judicial District, confirmed that the court has been receiving both threats and commendations regarding the judge’s decision. The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is actively reviewing these threats and has increased security measures at the courthouse in response to the situation.

Peters has gained a following among supporters of election denialism, continuing to spread false claims about the 2020 election results even after her conviction. She has utilized social media platforms and made appearances on podcasts, including one hosted by Steve Bannon, to further her narrative.

The threats directed at the judge and court personnel reflect a troubling trend in recent years, where public officials, particularly those involved in the electoral process, face escalating harassment and intimidation. This surge in threats has been attributed to a polarized political climate and the hostile rhetoric employed by some political figures, particularly former President Donald Trump, against their opponents.
