On Friday, March 21, 2025, Newsweek reported that federal judge James Boasberg’s residence has come under scrutiny. The controversy arose after Boasberg demanded clarification regarding the deportation of Venezuelan nationals to El Salvador, prompting Trump to call for the judge’s impeachment.

The situation escalated when Boasberg warned officials from the Department of Justice on March 15 that a group of Venezuelan men should not be deported until he had reviewed the details of the case. Despite this directive, the men were deported the same day, leading Boasberg to investigate whether the Trump administration breached his court order.

Trump, responding to the ongoing legal tensions, took to his social media platform, Truth Social, labeling Boasberg as a member of the “lunatic left” and reiterating his call for impeachment. This prompted Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts to issue a rare public statement, asserting that federal judges should not face impeachment for making unpopular decisions.

Amid the fallout, pro-Trump commentators have launched a series of attacks on Boasberg and his family. Paul Perry, a senior reporter at the conservative outlet Real Clear Investigations, highlighted in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Boasberg lives in a $2.4 million home in a wealthy D.C. neighborhood, despite earning a federal salary of $247,000. This claim was met with opposition from some commentators, including Lois Romano, who defended Boasberg’s financial history and pointed out that he purchased the home 30 years ago when he was in private practice.

Furthermore, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt criticized Boasberg, stating that he is a “Democrat activist” appointed by Barack Obama. She also noted that Boasberg’s wife, Elizabeth Manson, has contributed over $10,000 to Democratic causes, suggesting that the judge has shown bias against the current administration.

Republican attorney Daniel R. Street echoed these sentiments on X, questioning the financial integrity of a judge with a government background living in such an expensive home. Right-wing commentator Laura Loomer further scrutinized Boasberg’s family, alleging that his daughter’s professional affiliations indicate a conflict of interest, calling for him to recuse himself from cases related to deportation policies.
