On Thursday, October 10, 2024, the Chicago Tribune reported that Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak officially announced his retirement after a distinguished legal career spanning several decades. Friends, family, and colleagues gathered to celebrate his contributions to the judicial system, highlighting his 22 years of service as an associate judge.
Chief Judge Daniel B. Shanes praised Potkonjak’s dedication, noting his vigorous advocacy as an attorney and his fair administration of justice from the bench.
Potkonjak, who was born and raised in Waukegan, Illinois, completed his education at Waukegan High School, MacMurray College, and California Western School of Law. After gaining admission to the bar in 1982, he served for five years in the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office before transitioning to private practice.
In 2002, Potkonjak was appointed as a judge and took on various roles in the courtroom, most recently overseeing bond court, now referred to as first appearance court. Reflecting on his tenure, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating, “Being a judge is the greatest job in the world.” He acknowledged the emotional impact of leaving the bench, noting that he takes a part of the job with him while leaving a piece of himself behind.
