On Monday, June 8, 2026, WREG reported that a new race will be added to the Shelby County August ballot following the retirement of Criminal Court Judge Christopher Craft. The retirement of Craft opens the position of Criminal Court Judge in Division Eight.
The Shelby County Election Commission began issuing candidate petitions for the judicial seat on Monday, June 8. Those interested in running for the position must act quickly, as the qualifying deadline is noon on Wednesday, June 17. Candidates who file petitions but decide not to run have until noon on June 20 to withdraw their names from the ballot.
Petitions can be obtained from the Shelby County Election Commission. Following the withdrawal deadline, an updated certified candidate list will be posted, allowing voters to see who will be competing for the Division Eight seat.
This judicial race will be decided during the August county general election, which also includes federal and state primary contests.
Election officials are also reminding voters to ensure they are registered by the deadline of July 7 to participate in the August election.
