On Saturday, May 11, 2024, the Business Insider reported that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas spoke out about issues he has faced during a recent judicial conference in Alabama.

According to the article, Justice Thomas addressed the conference on Friday in Point Clear, Alabama. When asked about “working in a world that seems mean-spirited” by Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, Justice Thomas acknowledged there have been challenges. He said that in the last two to three years, it has been “just the nastiness and the lies” for both him and his wife.

While Justice Thomas did not go into specifics about the criticisms, the article notes he has faced scrutiny in the past. This includes controversy over failing to disclose luxury trips and donations from a billionaire donor. As a result, the Supreme Court adopted a conduct code advising justices to recuse from conflicts of interest, though it lacked an enforcement mechanism.

Justice Thomas’ wife Ginni also came under fire for her belief that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. She attended the rally in Washington D.C. that preceded the Capitol riot on January 6th. However, Justice Thomas has heard cases related to that event and former President Donald Trump’s claims of immunity despite these issues.

In his remarks on Friday, Justice Thomas was quoted describing Washington, D.C. as a place where people will “bomb your reputation or your good name or your honor.” He said he prefers traveling around the country in his recreational vehicle to being in the nation’s capital. His RV previously came under media scrutiny when questions arose around its financing.

In closing his presentation, Justice Thomas told the audience in Alabama that Washington is a “hideous place as far as I’m concerned.”
