In an interview with CBS Evening News, Ketanji Brown Jackson, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, spoke about Supreme Court ethics and her vision for the future of the institution.

Justice Jackson, who became the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court, acknowledged the public scrutiny the Court faces. However, she stated that democratic scrutiny is appropriate and important. Jackson aims to thoughtfully consider controversial issues before the Court with impartiality and care.

Regarding ethics, Jackson said she follows all existing rules for financial disclosures and accepting gifts. However, she recognizes public concern about appearances of impartiality and is open to further reform. While not endorsing specific proposals, Jackson sees value in an enforceable ethics code like those governing other courts. As the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, she feels a responsibility to maintain the highest standards of integrity.

Jackson did not comment on the ongoing controversy around Justice Thomas’ undisclosed gifts. But she emphasized the value of transparency, so the public can adequately judge if a justice’s rulings are impartial. Overall, Jackson aims to thoughtfully balance upholding the Court’s tradition of independence with ensuring it maintains public trust and confidence.

Looking ahead, Jackson expressed willingness to consider presidential immunity questions carefully, given their importance to democracy. As the 2024 election approaches, she acknowledged the Court may again face related issues and feels prepared though impartial. When asked about the prospect of Kamala Harris becoming the first Black woman president, Jackson avoided politics but said every ‘first’ represents progress toward full inclusion and equality.

In discussing her own path to the Court, Jackson credited her parents for instilling a strong work ethic and belief in her abilities. While privately facing challenges as a working mother, Jackson maintains a collegial relationship with the other justices, especially Justice Barrett, with whom she can relate most due to similarities in age and family responsibilities. Overall, Justice Jackson remains focused on diligently and impartially applying the law while preserving public faith in the judiciary.
