On Friday, January 17, 2025, 13 WMAZ reported that Chief Juvenile Court Judge Thomas J. Matthews has officially retired after a distinguished 48-year career in the Macon Judicial Circuit. The Macon community is bidding farewell to a prominent figure in the juvenile court system known for his dedication to the welfare of children.
Judge Matthews, who has served as Chief Juvenile Court Judge since February 1, 1997, expressed his hopes for the future of the judicial system in Macon. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among various agencies to achieve the best outcomes for children. “I want there to be systems in place where the judges can make the best effort to collaborate with other people in society to assure the best result for children,” Matthews stated.
Born in Williamsburg, Virginia, Matthews established his roots in Macon after earning a political science degree from Mercer University in 1971, followed by a law degree in 1973. Before taking the bench, he served for 19 years as a prosecutor in the District Attorney’s office, where he received numerous accolades, including the title of ‘Assistant District Attorney of the Year.’
Dee Simms, a friend and former mentee, spoke highly of Matthews’ contributions to the DA’s office, stating he played a crucial role in mentoring young prosecutors. Matthews also shared his expertise as an adjunct professor at Mercer, where he taught law students about juvenile court and procedures.
Throughout his nearly three decades on the bench, Matthews faced numerous challenges but found great fulfillment in witnessing children overcome difficulties and thrive. “My greatest joy is to find out that children have moved past whatever the problem was and moved on to a better, happier life,” he said.
Judge Matthews’ official last day in service is January 31, 2025. As he transitions into retirement, he looks forward to spending quality time with his wife, Kathy, of 51 years, along with enjoying hobbies such as reading and home improvement projects.
In recognition of his service, the Macon-Bibb County community held a retirement celebration where County Manager Keith Moffett declared January 16 as “Judge Thomas J. Matthews Day.” The event brought together friends, family, and notable figures from the community, including Chief Judge Philip Raymond and former Chief Judge Howard Simms.
The Macon Judicial Circuit will soon appoint a successor to fill the role held by Matthews for a four-year term.
