On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, WBRZ reported that Judge Eboni Johnson Rose returned to her position at the 19th Judicial District Court (JDC) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after a nearly year-long suspension. Upon her return, Judge Rose did not address the circumstances surrounding her suspension, which began in August 2024.
The Judiciary Commission suspended Rose following her involvement in several controversial cases, including the conviction of Baton Rouge Police officer Donald Steele for a crime that did not exist. Additionally, she faced criticism for exceeding the legal limits on a sentence for an arsonist, a mistake she later referred to as a “regrettable oversight.”
The Judicial Commission board ordered Rose to pay over $11,000 to cover the costs of their investigation. Despite her suspension, she received more than $100,000 in salary, while the judges filling in for her earned over $60,000. She also received a $15,000 stipend during this period.
In her first court session after the suspension, Judge Rose did not comment on her previous actions or the suspension itself, instead focusing on court proceedings.
