On Thursday, May 7, 2026, Spectrum News 1 reported that Maverick County Judge Ramsey Cantú has been temporarily suspended from his position following allegations of misconduct.

A group of residents in the South Texas county, which includes the city of Eagle Pass, is seeking Cantú’s removal from office, claiming he mishandled county funds and entered the county into illegal agreements.

A judge ordered Cantú’s suspension this week, citing the severity of the allegations. Cantú now awaits a jury trial that will determine if he will be permanently removed from his position.

In response, Cantú took to Facebook, calling the allegations a “conspiracy” and a “witchhunt.” “Battles should be based on facts,” Cantú said. Battles should be based on what is the best for our community, not for politics.”

Local attorney Rolando Jasso has been appointed as the interim county judge.

The suspension comes amid growing opposition from Maverick County residents regarding an international bridge project approved by county officials. The legality of that agreement is now under review by a judge.

Cantú’s suspension is based on Chapter 87 of the Texas Local Government Code, which allows for the removal of a county judge for “incompetency” or “official misconduct.”

Cantú is also a candidate in the Democratic primary runoff against Gerardo Morales, scheduled for May 26. During the March primary, Morales garnered 49.9% of the vote, while Cantú received 27.8%.
