On Tuesday, December 10, 2024, CBS 58 reported that Milwaukee’s former city attorney, Tearman Spencer, faced a significant development in his legal proceedings as Judge Danielle Shelton recused herself from his case shortly after it began.
The 68-year-old Spencer is accused of leveraging his position for personal gain, specifically involving a now-demolished building on N. MLK Jr. Drive where he allegedly stored multiple vehicles. The charges also include claims that he intimidated a Department of Neighborhood Services employee during an inspection related to code violations.
Originally set to appear before Judge Kristy Yang, Spencer’s case was reassigned to Judge Shelton, who indicated that prior notice was needed for media coverage in her courtroom. However, during the session, Shelton recused herself after revealing that Spencer had contributed $250 to her campaign and attended various campaign events. This led to the case being reassigned to Judge Jorge Fragoso.
Spencer’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 30, where he faces potential penalties of up to four years in prison and fines reaching $20,000 if convicted.
