On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, Nevada Appeal reported that Judge Kristin Luis of the First Judicial District Court recently completed an intensive two-week course titled General Jurisdiction: Advanced at the National Judicial College. This program is specifically designed for district court judges and aims to enhance their judicial competencies.
According to a news release from city officials, the course covers essential areas such as courtroom management, judicial ethics, evidence handling, case management, judicial security, and decision-making. Graduates of the program can also earn credit hours toward a Master of Judicial Studies degree.
Benes Z. Aldana, a retired judge and president of the National Judicial College, noted that the transition from practicing attorney to judge can be rapid, often leaving new judges without adequate guidance. The course provides critical educational support to help judges navigate their new roles effectively.
Judge Luis expressed her appreciation for the National Judicial College’s dedication to judicial education. She emphasized her commitment to ongoing professional development in order to serve the communities of Carson City and Storey County effectively.
Luis’s participation in the program was supported by the Nevada Supreme Court and the Administrative Office of the Courts. She was appointed to her position by Governor Joe Lombardo last year, filling the unexpired term of Judge James Wilson.
