On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, The Taylorsville Times reported that North Carolina District Court Judge Bryan Corbett has submitted his resignation, as confirmed by local court officials. Chief District Court Judge Edward L. Hedrick, IV, communicated this news in a letter addressed to the 32nd Judicial District Bar, expressing regret over Corbett’s departure.
Judge Hedrick noted that Corbett cited personal reasons for his resignation but chose not to provide any further details. He commended Corbett for his strong work ethic and commitment to fairness in his judicial role. In light of Corbett’s resignation, Judge Hedrick indicated his willingness to expedite the scheduling of any ongoing cases or those awaiting decisions that were previously assigned to Corbett.
Judge Corbett was elected to the District Court in both 2020 and 2024, serving unopposed in his most recent election. His background includes a notable athletic career, having been a standout pitcher at Alexander Central High School, where he earned the title of Northwestern Conference 4A Player of the Year in 2005. During that season, he notably outperformed Madison Bumgarner, a future All-Star pitcher for the San Francisco Giants.
After high school, Corbett received a baseball scholarship to Western Carolina University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management, along with a Minor in Business Administration, in December 2009. He later attended the Charlotte School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in May 2015, graduating in the top five percent of his class and receiving multiple academic accolades.
Corbett’s legal career includes experience as an attorney with the firm Harbinson, Brzykcy, and Corbett, as well as various roles in the District Attorney’s Offices in both Charlotte and Statesville. Additionally, he served as a legal extern at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina in Charlotte.
The resignation marks a significant change in the 32nd Judicial District, and court officials are making arrangements to handle cases that were in progress under Judge Corbett’s supervision.
