On Monday, August 19, 2024, the New York Post reported that embattled Oklahoma Judge Brian Lovell is fighting to keep his job despite facing criminal charges and accusations of inappropriate relationships with bailiffs in his courtroom.

Lovell, 58, is under indictment for alleged drive-by shootings last year in Texas and Oklahoma. He also stands accused of having sexual relationships with two female bailiffs in the Garfield County Courthouse, with prosecutors claiming he had sex with one bailiff in the bathroom and her office.

However, Lovell’s attorneys have argued he should not lose his judicial position over the relationships. They cited cultural influences like “Fifty Shades of Grey,” “Sex and the City,” and songs by Marvin Gaye as evidence that consensual sex is now more accepted in mainstream society.

Prosecutors uncovered explicit text messages between Lovell and one bailiff from last summer, showing they exchanged sexual messages and images while on the job. The other bailiff also resigned, according to reports.

Lovell faces charges of neglect of duty, corruption, and misusing his position, as prosecutors accuse him of improper backroom deals and preferential treatment in the courtroom. His legal team contends the state really wants Lovell gone due to last year’s drive-by shooting incidents.

In September 2023, Lovell was indicted in Texas for allegedly shooting six parked cars and ramming his SUV into another vehicle. He was also indicted in May 2024 for allegedly firing a handgun at his brother-in-law’s Oklahoma home in February. Lovell claimed his gun was stolen but it was later found in his possession, matching the shootings.

Prosecutors are seeking to remove Lovell before his December trial. The court will consider their request at a hearing on September 12.
