On Thursday, August 14, 2025, KFOR reported that Oklahoma Judge Heather Coyle recused herself from the case of Richard Glossip, a former death row inmate, just before a scheduled court hearing. The hearing was intended to address a new brief submitted by Glossip’s legal team, raising concerns over the handling of his case.

Attorney Don Knight, representing Glossip, expressed frustration over the judge’s withdrawal, emphasizing the emotional toll on his client. “Mr. Glossip, of course, is truly frustrated,” Knight stated.

The status conference was set for 10 a.m. to discuss details pertaining to an agreement Knight claims he reached with Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond in April 2023.

Knight clarified that the discussions did not involve a plea bargain but rather focused on resolving the matter to prevent Glossip from suing the state. He noted that no new developments have emerged since their last communication, indicating that the situation remains unchanged.

Republican Representative JJ Humphrey, a supporter of Glossip, described him as a “political prisoner.” Humphrey criticized the Attorney General’s motives, suggesting that political ambitions are influencing the case’s progression. He urged Glossip’s legal team to hold Drummond accountable for the agreement made.

Currently, Glossip remains incarcerated at the Oklahoma County Jail, awaiting a new trial and the assignment of a different judge. Knight expressed concerns for Glossip’s health, noting that the 62-year-old is not well and faces risks in the county jail environment. “There’s no guarantee that he’ll survive another year in that county jail because it’s a dangerous county jail anyway,” he added.

Glossip’s legal team is also preparing to request an evidentiary hearing to introduce additional witnesses in the case.
