On Saturday, March 29, 2025, WITN reported that the Pitt County Democratic Party expressed significant disappointment following the unexpected removal of Judge Marvin Blount from his position as Senior Resident Superior Court Judge. Molly Holdeman, chair of the Pitt County Democratic Party, criticized the decision, stating that Judge Blount had efficiently managed the courthouse operations in North Carolina.
Judge Blount was informed of his removal during a phone call from Chief Justice Paul Newby, a Republican, on Thursday. He is being replaced by Judge Jeffrey Foster, who is also a Republican. Holdeman noted that the lack of explanation for the abrupt decision raised concerns, suggesting it may be politically motivated.
In response to the situation, Pitt County GOP Chair Drock Vincent provided a statement, indicating his friendship with both judges and affirming their capabilities. However, he refrained from offering further comment on the decision.
Holdeman emphasized the Democratic Party’s commitment to support Judge Blount throughout his remaining term, which extends until 2030. She assured that despite the change, Judge Blount would continue to fulfill his responsibilities impartially.
This shift in judicial leadership follows a recent legislative change that granted Chief Justice Newby the authority to appoint resident judges, deviating from the previous system where the longest-serving judge assumed the role of Senior Resident Judge.
