On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, PJ Media reported that Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over former president Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York City, may have another potential conflict of interest regarding his daughter’s work.

Loren Merchan runs a digital marketing firm called Authentic Campaigns. The report found that Authentic Campaigns has worked with the Brennan Center for Justice, which filed a brief supporting the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to remove Trump from the ballot in that state. Ultimately, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 9-0 in favor of keeping Trump on the ballot.

However, Authentic Campaigns still lists the Brennan Center as an active client and claims to have boosted the organization’s newsletter subscribers by 300,000 through campaigns aimed at engaging potential advocates and donors. Critics argue this presents a conflict of interest for Judge Merchan, as his daughter’s company has financially benefited from work assisting groups targeting Trump.

The case against Trump in New York, which alleges falsified business records, has been controversial from the beginning. Both the Department of Justice and the former Manhattan District Attorney declined to prosecute after investigating. Even CNN host Fareed Zakaria has admitted the case appears politically motivated. However, Judge Merchan has refused calls to recuse himself, despite Trump’s team arguing Merchan’s impartiality is in question due to his daughter’s partisan activities supporting organizations seeking to undermine Trump.

Some legal experts believe the case itself is weak and unlikely to hold up in court. Nevertheless, it has kept Trump’s name in the headlines as he hints at a third run for president in 2024. The report in PJ Media raises new questions about whether Judge Merchan can fairly oversee this high-profile trial, given his daughter’s associations with anti-Trump organizations directly related to legal actions against the former president.
