On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, San Angelo LIVE reported that Judge Jesus “Jesse” Nevarez of Tarrant County, Texas was publicly reprimanded by the Texas State Commission on Judicial Conduct for engaging in inappropriate behavior toward female colleagues.
According to the commission’s findings, Nevarez sent text messages to Judge Lindsay DeVos from December 2021 through June 2022 where he addressed her using terms such as “babe,” “hon” and “beautiful.” When DeVos resigned from her position in August 2022, Nevarez referred to her as “baby” twice during an audio recorded conversation about her departure. In the recording, he also proclaimed that he had “loved DeVos forever.”
Two confidential sources also claimed to witness sexually-charged conduct between Nevarez and DeVos in the workplace. DeVos said that on occasions when she wore dresses to work, Nevarez made comments about her appearance like “I like it. It looks good.”
An attorney likewise accused Nevarez of making her feel sexually harassed through sending her his personal cell phone number and a private message on Facebook.
While finding his actions constituted inappropriate behavior, the commission decided Nevarez’s misconduct did not warrant removal from the bench or suspension. He was issued a public reprimand and ordered to complete eight hours of supplemental training in areas like demeanor, sexual harassment education, and mentorship.
