On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, KRIS 6 News reported that Texas Judge Nanette Hasette has stepped down from the case involving Devaughan Marquise Williams, who faces charges related to the death of Kiara Smith, the mother of his child. The tragic incident occurred in Smith’s home on the 1100 block of Green Earth Drive, where she was allegedly shot by Williams.
Williams, 25, was already on probation for two prior felony offenses. One of these involved a violent incident from June 2023, during which he attacked Smith while she was pregnant. The second offense occurred five months later, when he reportedly threatened his sister with a gun and attempted to choke her. Both cases were overseen by Judge Hasette in the 28th District Court.
Despite the serious nature of these previous offenses, Judge Hasette had not mandated that Williams stay away from Smith, although he was required to attend anger management classes as part of his bond conditions. Furthermore, it was reported that the two earlier cases were not referred to the specialty court that addresses domestic violence probation matters.
Following her recusal on September 10, the case has been reassigned to Judge Susan Barclay. Currently, Williams remains in custody at the Nueces County jail without bond as the legal proceedings continue.
