On Tuesday, November 18, 2025, the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct suspended Uvalde County Judge William Ross Mitchell without pay, effective immediately. The suspension stems from an indictment handed up by the Uvalde County Grand Jury on November 3, 2025, charging Mitchell with one count of Official Oppression, a Class A Misdemeanor.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Judge William Ross Mitchell,” with case number 26-0331.
The indictment, filed in the 38th Judicial District Court under Cause No. 2025-11-17377-CR, alleges that on or about March 27, 2025, William Ross Mitchell “intentionally subject T. Cox, to arrest or detention or seizure that the defendant knew was unlawful, and the defendant was acting under color of his office as a public servant, namely the county judge.” The Texas Rangers investigated the case, referenced under Agency Case No. 2025-0015596.
The Commission’s order specifies that the suspension will remain in place until the charges in the indictment are either dismissed, Judge Mitchell is acquitted of all charges, or until further orders are issued by the Commission. The Commission retains the authority to reconsider the order if additional information warrants such action.
