On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, HuffPost reported that former Trump White House lawyer Ty Cobb expressed surprise about the assignment of Judge Aileen Cannon to oversee the criminal trial of Ryan Wesley Routh, who is accused of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump at his Florida golf club.
Cannon, a Trump appointee, had previously presided over the classified documents case involving the former president.
Cobb, who has been critical of Cannon’s handling of the classified documents case, called the judge’s assignment to the Routh trial “remarkable.” He speculated that Cannon would likely recuse herself or have the case reassigned, noting that the defense attorney would file a motion to transfer the case citing perceived bias, given Cannon’s ties to Trump.
If Cannon did not grant such a motion, Cobb said it could lead to an appellate issue for the defendant to request the 11th Circuit remove her.
Cobb said that while unlikely, if Cannon did remain as the presiding judge, it would be “one more crazy fact” in the current political climate.
