On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the San Juan Record reported that Judge Lyon Hazleton retired from the bench after dedicating over three decades of service. His tenure included 32 years as a San Juan County Justice Court Judge and 25 years with the Monticello City Justice Court.

Hazleton’s career with the county began in 1989 when he started working as a diesel mechanic. In 1994, he transitioned to the role of San Juan County Justice Court Judge, succeeding the Honorable Harold Muhlestein. By 1999, Judge Hazleton’s responsibilities expanded as he was appointed to the Justice Court for Monticello City, following the retirement of the Honorable Rigby Wright. He served both Justice Courts concurrently until his retirement at the close of 2025.

During an interim period, Judge Hazleton took on the additional role of Magistrate of the Blanding City Justice Court, effectively serving as Judge for all three courts within the county. Known for his commitment, Hazleton maintained an exceptional record of presence in his office, ensuring accessibility to the public and his clerks for any questions, problems, or concerns.

A retirement celebration was held in December to honor his service, attended by family and friends. Until a permanent replacement is found, a pro tem judge from Carbon County will assume Judge Hazleton’s position on the Bench.
