On Tuesday, December 31, 2024, The Logan Banner reported that Logan Circuit Judge Kelly Gilmore Codispoti received a public admonition from the West Virginia Judicial Investigation Commission. The admonition, issued December 11, 2024, stemmed from a lawsuit filed in March 2024 by Chris Trent, the former Logan County grant facilitator, against the Logan County Commission. Trent’s lawsuit alleged violations of the Open Governmental Meetings Act.

The Commission’s ruling found Judge Codispoti violated several canons of judicial conduct. These violations pertained to adherence to the law, maintaining public confidence in the judiciary, prioritizing judicial duties, resisting external influences, demonstrating competence and diligence, and fulfilling her responsibilities in decision-making.

Despite the severity of the violations, the Commission opted for a public admonition rather than formal charges. This decision was based on Judge Codispoti’s admission of misconduct and her lack of prior disciplinary actions.

A public admonition, in legal terms, serves as a strong warning against future misconduct.
