On Thursday, February 6, 2025, Covering Katy reported that Fort Bend District Court Judge J. Christian Becerra has announced his intention to run against the currently indicted County Judge KP George in the upcoming Democratic primary. This announcement marks the second challenge to George within a week, highlighting a growing discontent among party members.
Becerra, who has served on the bench for five years in the 434th District Court, joins former Precinct 3 Constable Nabil Shike in the race. George faces serious allegations related to a purported scheme involving the promotion of fake racist social media posts during his previous campaign. Prosecutors allege that George, along with his former chief of staff Taral Patel, created and disseminated these divisive posts to manipulate voter sentiment, disguising them as originating from political adversaries.
In a statement, Becerra emphasized his commitment to community leadership, stating, “Leaders lead. I won’t stand for anyone who uses hate to drive a wedge between our communities.” As the administrative judge for the Council of Judges at the Fort Bend County Justice Center, Becerra has a firm grasp on the judicial landscape and its implications for local governance.
A fourth-generation resident of Fort Bend County, Becerra has a background as an assistant district attorney and has been involved in various community initiatives. He currently oversees the county’s Felony Mental Health Court and has introduced a behavioral health program in collaboration with local school districts. Becerra is also active on the boards of several organizations, including Fort Bend Family Promise, Attack Poverty, and the Fort Bend Literacy Council.
In discussing his campaign priorities, Becerra highlighted the importance of enhancing law enforcement resources to cover the county’s extensive 875 square miles. He underscored the necessity of planning for growth as new master-planned communities emerge, stating, “With an ever-increasing population, planning for the future is paramount for success.” He specifically called for investment in critical infrastructure, including roads and water systems, to support the county’s development.
Becerra will continue his judicial duties while campaigning and resides in Richmond with his wife, Lacy, and their three daughters. He concluded his remarks by asserting the need for experienced leadership in one of Texas’ fastest-growing counties, saying, “I am dedicated to leading this county, our people, and our future.”
The Democratic primary is set to determine the nominee for the general election in a county known for its diversity and rapid growth.
