On Friday, February 7, 2025, KOAT7 reported that a standards commission petitioned to remove New Mexico Judge Susan Griffin from her judicial position. The petition, submitted to the New Mexico Supreme Court, seeks to permanently bar Griffin from holding any judicial office. The Judicial Standards Commission initiated this action after a unanimous vote.

The allegations against Griffin include the misuse of her judicial authority by improperly accessing her own landlord-tenant lawsuit case. She is accused of taking swift actions to advance her lawsuit by filing a second related case, actions that have been interpreted as serving her own interests. Additionally, the commission claims that Griffin created a fraudulent document and found her testimony lacking credibility in several instances.

In response to these serious allegations, the New Mexico Supreme Court has scheduled an oral argument concerning the case against Griffin, set for Monday afternoon, April 7.

Notably, Griffin is the mother of former Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin, who was removed from office due to his involvement in the January 6 insurrection in 2021.
