On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, TAPSomerville reported that Somerset County Commissioner Douglas Singleterry has officially resigned from his position following his confirmation as a Superior Court judge by the New Jersey State Senate. His resignation took effect on June 2, marking the end of his tenure as an elected official.
Singleterry’s political career began in 2005 when he was elected as a councilman in North Plainfield. In 2020, he transitioned to serve as a County Commissioner, where he played a significant role as a liaison for Somerset County’s Vocational & Technical Schools and the Department of Public Safety. During his time as Commissioner, he was instrumental in securing funding for both the expansion of the VoTech facility and the County’s 911 Center.
The Democratic County Committee is now tasked with selecting an individual to fill the vacancy on the Board of County Commissioners. This appointment will be temporary until a special election is held in November. The Committee has a statutory period of 35 days to choose an Interim Commissioner.
In a statement reflecting on his service, Singleterry expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the residents of North Plainfield and Somerset County. He indicated his eagerness to continue serving the community in his new role as a judge.
Commissioner Director Shanel Robinson praised Singleterry for his contributions to the Board, highlighting his dedication to serving others and addressing community needs. Notably, he facilitated the creation of a coalition of County Food Banks, fostering collaboration to better assist Somerset County residents.
