On Friday, January 17, 2025, NBC 15 News reported that Don Davis, the Mobile County Judge of Probate, is retiring after over 24 years in office. Davis, who has served the community as an elected official, was honored in a retirement ceremony.

Mark Erwin, the Chief Clerk, will succeed Davis as the new judge of probate. Reflecting on his lengthy career, Davis expressed gratitude and surprise during the ceremony, stating, “I am just overwhelmed. I never expected this today.”

One of Davis’s significant contributions to the community has been the establishment of the Volunteer Guardian Program, initiated in 2011. This program addresses the needs of individuals in Mobile County who have been deemed incapacitated and lack guardians. According to Davis, there is a pressing demand for volunteers to assist these individuals, a need that extends beyond Mobile County and affects the state as a whole.

Davis emphasized the importance of this program, noting, “These are people in our community that don’t have anybody, or if they have family, their family have reached the trust that they’re not capable or suitable or trustworthy to be able to help their family member that’s in need.” He expressed pride in the program and hopes it continues to expand to meet the growing needs of the community.

As Davis prepares for retirement, he plans to relocate to Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife to be closer to their daughter and her family.
