On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, The Hill reported that tech billionaire Elon Musk has called for several judicial impeachments in response to perceived legal challenges against the Trump administration. Musk made these remarks on the social media platform X, reacting to a comment regarding U.S. District Judge John Bates, who recently ordered federal health agencies to restore online datasets that had been removed. Musk asserted that there should be “an immediate wave of judicial impeachments,” without providing supporting evidence for his claims.
Judge Bates’s ruling followed an executive order from former President Trump that aimed to prevent the government from promoting what he termed “gender ideology.” This order was challenged by Doctors for America (DFA), a left-leaning advocacy group for physicians, which argued that the removal of the datasets violated federal law.
Additionally, Musk has called for the impeachment of another federal judge who issued a ruling that temporarily restricted access for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to Treasury Department data.
In response to judicial setbacks, Trump stated that he would comply with court orders that obstruct elements of his agenda but expressed frustration over recent rulings that have impeded his administration’s initiatives. In a post on Truth Social, he claimed that DOGE had uncovered substantial fraud and incompetence but criticized a judge for insisting on payments despite these findings, labeling the situation as nonsensical.
The day prior, Musk had met with Trump in the Oval Office, a meeting that drew attention amid concerns about the legality of DOGE’s operations and Musk’s potential conflicts of interest due to his companies’ extensive government contracts. Both Musk and Vice President Vance have asserted in recent days that judges lack the authority to prevent the president from exercising his powers, raising alarms among Democrats and legal experts about a potential constitutional crisis.
