On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, CBS News reported that a Miami-Dade County circuit judge is facing potential disciplinary action over comments he made in a past court case.

According to the report, the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission has recommended that Judge Alberto Milian receive a public reprimand. This comes after an investigation by the commission found that the judge improperly weighed in on a motion seeking his disqualification from a case. Milian disputed the claims made in the motion, which the panel said puts him in an adversarial role against the filing party.

The judge has a similar past incident from 2016 under review as well. Documents posted to the Florida Supreme Court website note that Milian signed an agreement acknowledging his conduct in the case was “inappropriate” and should not have taken place. He further accepted responsibility for his actions.

As the high court has the final say on disciplining judges in Florida, the matter will now go before the Florida Supreme Court.
