On Wednesday, January 24, 2024, Binghamton Homepage reported that a former town judge candidate was convicted of falsely reporting an incident to 911.

According to the article, Delaware County District Attorney Shawn J. Smith announced that George Sydlar, a 74-year-old man from Davenport, New York, was found guilty by a jury on January 19, 2024, in the Town of Kortright.

Sydlar was charged with falsely reporting an incident to 911, a class A misdemeanor, relating to an incident that occurred in the Town of Davenport on July 6, 2023. The case was transferred to the Town of Kortright after the Davenport judge recused himself due to a potential conflict of interest, as Sydlar was running for Davenport Town Judge at the time of his arrest.

It is alleged that Sydlar called 911 to report that his neighbor had committed a crime, despite knowing his neighbor had not actually committed any crime. Further allegations stated that Sydlar had engaged in this behavior approximately two dozen times after being told by police that any disputes with his neighbor were civil rather than criminal matters.

After rejecting multiple plea deals, a jury was selected in the Town of Kortright to hear the case, which was tried by First Assistant District Attorney Schuyler Kinneman. After four witnesses testified, the jury deliberated for less than an hour before finding Sydlar guilty as charged. Judge Yvonne J. Pagillo subsequently ordered a pre-sentence investigation and adjourned the case until March for sentencing. Sydlar faces up to one year in jail.
