On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Georgia Judge Currie M. Mingledorff II recused himself from the trial of Colt Gray, a teenager charged with a deadly shooting at Apalachee High School. The judge’s decision was made in the interest of ensuring the efficient administration of justice, particularly as he is preparing to retire from the bench.

The case, which has drawn significant public attention, involves Colt Gray, who is accused of using a semi-automatic AR-15 style rifle to open fire in the school’s J hall during class on September 4, resulting in the deaths of four individuals: two teachers and two 14-year-old students. In addition to the fatalities, nine others sustained injuries during the incident. Gray faces a total of 55 charges, including multiple counts of murder and aggravated assault.

With Judge Mingledorff stepping down, the case has been reassigned to Judge Sarah Griffie. The trial’s timeline continues to unfold, with arraignments for both Colt Gray and his father, Colin Gray, scheduled for November 21.

Colin Gray faces his own set of 29 charges, which include second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, stemming from allegations that he ignored warning signs regarding his son’s behavior and purchased the firearm used in the shooting as a gift.
