On Saturday, February 28, 2026, FOX10 News reported that Mobile County District Court Judge Deborah Tillman resigned from her position after serving less than a year on the bench. The Mobile County Judicial Commission is now seeking applicants to fill the vacancy.
Tillman, who previously worked for former District Attorney John Tyson and Ashley Rich, took the position after former Judge Spiro Cheriogotis left to become mayor of Mobile. Governor Kay Ivey announced Tillman as Cheriogotis’ replacement in July, and she was sworn in during a ceremony in September.
Application packets for the position became available on February 23 and can be obtained through March 23 from Kristin Muscat in the Court Administration at Government Plaza, located at 205 Government St., Room 858. The judicial commission stated that completed applications must be returned to the same location by April 17.
The announcement of the applicants is scheduled for April 20, and public commentary will be accepted until May 11. Following the public commentary period, the commission will convene on May 14 to select three applicants. The governor will then appoint one of the three finalists to fill the vacant District Court Place 4 judge position.
