On Saturday, October 5, 2024, FOX 8 News reported that the Ohio Supreme Court’s Board of Professional Conduct has recommended an 18-month suspension without pay for Geauga County Judge Timothy Grendell. This recommendation follows allegations of misconduct related to his judicial responsibilities and political activities.

The board’s findings stem from a complaint filed in 2022, which accused Judge Grendell of overstepping his authority in court and compromising his impartiality by supporting legislation linked to his spouse, former Republican state representative Diane Grendell. The board’s report highlights multiple instances of misconduct that raise significant ethical concerns regarding his behavior as a sitting judge.

In June 2020, Judge Grendell controversially closed his courtroom early to travel to Columbus, where he testified in favor of House Bill 624. This bill mandated that the state health department publish daily coronavirus statistics. During his testimony, he criticized state health officials, accusing them of not providing complete information about the COVID-19 situation and engaging in fearmongering. Although Judge Grendell claimed ignorance about the bill’s impact on the judiciary, the board noted that his involvement was inappropriate given his position.

Furthermore, the board identified conduct violations in a custody case he presided over, where Judge Grendell ordered the detention of two children for nearly three days. This decision was made after the children expressed fears about attending visitations with their father, citing prior physical abuse. The board described the detention as “horrific, and completely unnecessary and uncalled for,” and stated that the detention was deemed unlawful. Testimonies indicated that the children were negatively affected by the experience.

In addition to these issues, Judge Grendell faced accusations of threatening a Chardon police lieutenant who was investigating a trespassing complaint in June 2019. Surveillance footage captured the judge, in his judicial robe, confronting the officer outside the courthouse, where he was seen yelling and gesturing aggressively. In subsequent discussions with the police chief, Judge Grendell allegedly threatened legal action against the officers, who were simply fulfilling their duties in the investigation.

The board’s decision to recommend suspension also includes a stipulation that Judge Grendell must complete eight hours of judicial ethics education, focusing on the appropriate use of contempt powers. The panel’s recommendation followed extensive hearings where dozens of witnesses, including Judge Grendell himself, provided testimony over nine days. The proceedings involved hundreds of exhibits and thousands of pages of documentation.

Judge Timothy Grendell has been a member of the legal profession since 1978 and was appointed to the Geauga County court in 2011 by then-Governor John Kasich.

The board’s recommendation reflects serious concerns regarding his adherence to judicial conduct rules, indicating a troubling pattern of behavior that undermines the integrity of the judicial system.

The Ohio Supreme Court will ultimately review the board’s recommendation and determine the final outcome of Judge Grendell’s case.
