On Friday, September 6, 2024, Newsmax reported that House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik filed an ethics complaint against New York Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing former President Donald Trump’s ongoing business records trial.

In the complaint filed with the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct, Stefanik called for a fresh inquiry into whether Judge Merchan’s daughter, Lauren, has used her father’s high-profile role presiding over the Trump case to benefit her own digital fundraising company, Authentic Campaigns.

Stefanik had previously submitted an initial request for an investigation months ago, citing complaints about Lauren Merchan allegedly using the Trump trial to boost her business. However, the Commission rejected looking into the matter further at that time.

In the new complaint, Stefanik argued that new information has surfaced that warrants a second look into potential conflicts of interest. She noted that campaign finance reports show Vice President Kamala Harris hired Authentic Campaigns after replacing Joe Biden as the party’s top ticket candidate.

Stefanik claimed that when the Appellate Division and Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics issued earlier opinions dismissing concerns about Judge Merchan, they could not have known about Authentic Campaigns also working for the Harris campaign.

Federal Election Commission filings cited in the complaint include a $468 payment from the Harris campaign to the company for web hosting services, with Stefanik stating this was “one of the very first things that Harris did upon taking over the Biden campaign infrastructure.”

Coinciding with the ethics complaint filing, Judge Merchan delayed Trump’s sentencing in his business records trial until November 26, pushing it back from the originally scheduled date of September 18, just before the midterm elections.

Stefanik, a strong supporter of Trump, contended that Democrats have been improperly using the courts to inflict political damage on the former president. While most of her previous ethics complaints against judges have been rejected, none have resulted in significant changes in Trump’s ongoing legal troubles.
