On Tuesday, April 30, 2024, Just the News reported that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan claimed there was a conflict of interest in former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial over alleged hush money payments.

In an interview on “Just the News, No Noise” TV show, Jordan said the presiding judge, Juan Merchan, should recuse himself from the case because his daughter has close ties to prominent Democrats. Loren Merchan heads a fundraising firm called Authentic Campaigns that has helped raise money for Democrats like Vice President Kamala Harris.

Jordan argued that Loren Merchan’s work for Democratic politicians and consultancies created both the appearance of bias and an actual conflict of interest for her father to oversee the trial of a Republican former president. He noted Trump’s legal team has twice motioned for Judge Merchan to recuse himself due to his daughter’s affiliations but that request has been denied both times.

The criminal trial stems from accusations that Trump falsified business records regarding hush money payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign to porn actress Stormy Daniels, who alleged having an affair with Trump years prior. If convicted, Trump could face fines or jail time. However, as Jordan stated, the former president’s lawyers believe Merchan cannot be impartial given his daughter’s in-depth involvement in fundraising for Democratic causes and candidates.

Neither Judge Merchan nor Loren Merchan have commented on the allegations of a conflict. However, the Code of Conduct for U.S. Judges stipulates that family or other relationships should have no influence on a judge’s conduct or rulings. Jordan contends that standard is not being followed in this case.
