On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Action News 5 reported that Tennessee State Senator Brent Taylor filed a new complaint against Shelby County Judge Bill Anderson, following a controversial interview where the judge defended his bail decisions for alleged violent offenders. Taylor’s complaint has been submitted to the Tennessee Board of Judicial Conduct, requesting the board to suspend Judge Anderson pending an investigation.

In the interview aired on Monday, Judge Anderson explained his rationale for allowing a significant number of alleged violent criminals to be released without bond. He stated that he does not take current charges into account when determining bail, asserting that individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Anderson emphasized that community safety should be assessed based on a suspect’s prior criminal history rather than the particulars of the present case. He mentioned that factors such as a history of violence or failure to appear in court are more relevant in his decision-making process.

Senator Taylor expressed serious concerns regarding Anderson’s interpretation of the law in his letter to the Board. He argued that the judge’s actions pose a considerable danger to public safety in Memphis and Shelby County. Taylor’s latest complaint adds to a previous one he filed earlier this year.

In February, Judge Anderson received a reprimand due to comments he made that were deemed disparaging towards the bail system.
