On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, The Hill reported that former President Donald Trump called for the removal of multiple judges ahead of an upcoming gag order ruling in his ongoing criminal case.

According to the article, Trump took to his Truth Social media platform to criticize three judges overseeing legal disputes involving him. He slammed Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over Trump’s New York criminal case related to hush money payments made during the 2016 election. Trump faces felony charges for falsifying business records regarding reimbursements to his former attorney, Michael Cohen. Trump referred to Merchan as a “Rigged Judge” who is working for Democrats and refusing to terminate the “case, which should have never been brought.”

Trump also attacked Judge Arthur Engoron, who ruled against Trump in a New York civil fraud case. Trump claimed Engoron had “fraudulently fined” him $500 million without proper knowledge of finance or valuation. Additionally, Trump criticized Judge Lewis Kaplan, who ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million to columnist E. Jean Carroll in a defamation suit. Trump argued Kaplan allowed a woman he had “never met” to receive an “unlawful” $90 million judgment.

Prosecutors in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office stated that Trump violated Judge Merchan’s gag order ten times by attacking parties involved in the criminal proceedings via Truth Social. The gag order prohibits Trump from making public comments about prosecutors, court staff, witnesses, or the judge’s family. Trump’s lawyer Todd Blanche maintained his client was merely responding to political attacks.

Judge Merchan said he would issue a ruling on the alleged gag order violations but noted Trump’s lawyer was losing credibility by claiming Trump was being careful not to violate the order.
