On Saturday, October 5, 2024, Reuters reported that a man from Illinois has been charged with making violent threats against a federal judge in Florida, who has been involved in cases related to former President Donald Trump. The indictment, which was made public on Thursday, outlines five federal charges against 65-year-old Eric James Rennert. These charges include accusations of communicating interstate threats and threats to assault, kidnap, and murder the judge.

The indictment alleges that Rennert’s threats extended to injuring or kidnapping members of the judge’s family. While the court documents do not disclose the name of the judge who received these threats, they indicate that the incidents took place in St. Lucie County, Florida. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who presided over the criminal case against Trump concerning the illegal retention of classified documents, is based in this county.

Rennert’s threats were reportedly communicated on three separate occasions in May and July of this year. According to the indictment, they were made in retaliation against the judge “on account of the performance of official duties.” Following his arrest, Rennert is set to be transported to Florida for his upcoming court appearance, although he has not yet entered a plea.

Judge Cannon, appointed by Trump during his presidency from 2017 to 2021, has faced scrutiny over her handling of the classified documents case. In July, she dismissed all charges, citing a finding that Special Counsel Jack Smith was unlawfully appointed. Prosecutors are currently appealing this ruling, aiming to revive the case. If successful, any trial related to the case would likely occur well after the upcoming presidential election on November 5, where Trump will face off against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

In addition to her involvement in the Trump case, Judge Cannon has also been assigned to preside over another high-profile case involving an individual accused of attempting to assassinate Trump last month at a golf course in Florida. This underscores the heightened risks faced by federal judges in recent years.

The surge in threats against federal judges is part of a broader trend of increasing violent rhetoric directed at public officials in the United States. In a related incident, a woman in Texas was sentenced to over three years in prison earlier this year after admitting to threatening Judge Cannon.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Miami, which is handling the indictment against Rennert, has not yet issued a statement. The federal court in the Southern District of Florida also did not respond immediately to requests for comment regarding the case.
