On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, Newsweek reported that President Donald Trump’s supporters, known as the MAGA, have raised concerns regarding the assignment of U.S. District Judge James Boasberg to a new lawsuit. This lawsuit, which involves high-ranking Cabinet officials’ communications about military actions via the Signal app, has sparked skepticism among Trump’s supporters due to Boasberg’s previous rulings.

Judge Boasberg gained notoriety this month for overseeing a contentious case related to the Trump administration’s expedited deportation of migrants. This case invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, a wartime statute that allows the president to detain or deport non-citizens. The implementation of this act faced legal challenges and was blocked in federal court, leading to significant backlash against Boasberg, who serves as a chief judge.

The recent scrutiny of the Trump administration intensified following a report from The Atlantic, which disclosed that Boasberg was included in a thread on the encrypted messaging app Signal. This thread featured discussions among Cabinet officials concerning military operations against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The lawsuit emerged from a nonpartisan watchdog group, American Oversight, which filed the complaint on Tuesday, accusing several high-ranking officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, of violating the Administrative Procedure Act and the Federal Records Act.

The case was assigned to Judge Boasberg in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Wednesday. The assignment prompted a wave of criticism and allegations of bias from Trump supporters across social media platforms. Republican Representative Jim Jordan from Ohio expressed concerns during an appearance on Benny Johnson’s podcast, questioning the randomness of Boasberg’s case assignments. He suggested that Boasberg should consider recusing himself, citing potential bias stemming from his previous rulings, including those related to the FISA court and surveillance warrants affecting Trump’s campaign.

Jordan highlighted Boasberg’s history, referring to his past decisions that he believes show a bias against Trump and his supporters. He stated, “There’s a lot of people who think there’s a bias,” and noted Boasberg’s previous involvement in cases that could be perceived as unfavorable to the Trump administration.

In reaction to the assignment, Trump ally Mike Davis called for an inquiry into the case assignment process, questioning the transparency and fairness of Boasberg’s involvement. Meanwhile, conservative influencer Jack Posobiec and others on social media expressed similar concerns, framing the assignment as part of a broader pattern of judicial bias against Trump.
