On Thursday, October 24, 2024, WCJB reported that Judge Anne Marie Gennusa, currently facing re-election, has been admonished by the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission for judicial misconduct. The commission’s investigation revealed that Gennusa improperly issued criminal contempt charges against several individuals in her courtroom.
The complaint, filed on October 21, highlighted a particular case involving a mother sentenced to ten days in jail during a truancy hearing in November 2023. This mother’s children had missed school following a traumatic event where one child witnessed the murder of their grandfather. Gennusa described the mother’s behavior as “belligerent” and “deplorable.” However, the recording of the hearing did not corroborate this assessment, according to the ethics complaint.
With 29 years of legal experience, Gennusa’s actions have raised significant concerns regarding her adherence to judicial ethics.
