On Friday, May 24, 2024, Newsmax reported that seven more House Democrats had joined a resolution to censure Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. The resolution was introduced by Representative Steve Cohen of Tennessee earlier this month.

The resolution aims to censure Justice Alito following a New York Times report that claimed an upside-down American flag, a symbol used by supporters of former President Trump to contest Joe Biden’s 2020 election win, was flown outside Justice Alito’s home in Virginia after the election.

The seven Democrats now supporting the resolution include Representatives Delia Ramirez and Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, Becca Balint of Vermont, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Kevin Mullin of California, Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania, and Adriano Espaillat of New York.

Representative Cohen, who introduced the resolution, stated that Justice Alito’s display of the flag showed his political bias and support for the January 6th insurrectionists. Cohen argued that Alito continues to participate in litigation related to the 2020 election and insurrection, violating federal recusal statutes and Supreme Court ethics rules.

Cohen said there must be accountability to protect the integrity and impartiality of the high court. He believes Justice Alito should be censured for breaching laws and court rules and must recuse himself from any other 2020 election or January 6th related cases.

However, the resolution faces an uphill battle as it is unlikely to come up for a vote in the House, which remains under Republican control.
