On Thursday, May 16, 2024, government watchdog Accountable.US president Caroline Ciccone called on Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas to recuse themselves from any 2020 election-related cases in light of new reported ethics issues.

In a statement, Ciccone said recent news revealing a “Stop the Steal” symbol was flown over Justice Alito’s home as the court considered a 2020 election case raised serious questions about the Justices’ impartiality. She argued Americans expect Supreme Court justices to uphold the rule of law without political biases.

Ciccone added the incident was the latest in a string of ethics problems that have undermined public trust in the high court. With the Supreme Court set to decide key cases impacting American democracy, Ciccone maintained Justice Alito has shown he is not suited to make those consequential rulings.

She called on Justice Alito and Justice Thomas to immediately recuse from any pending or future cases tied to the 2020 election. Justice Thomas’s wife, Ginni Thomas, has faced scrutiny for her purported involvement in efforts to overturn the election results.

The Accountable.US president also urged Chief Justice John Roberts to take urgent action on the “unacceptable ethics crisis” facing the Supreme Court. Ciccone argued that self-policing is no longer sufficient, given recent controversies that add to perceptions of political bias on the bench.
